Rountree competes in CNU Pentathlon

Comments

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. After landing on the plane and seeing the Atlantic Ocean for the first time, Tess Rountree was stoked to compete at Christopher Newport University's pentathlon/heptathlon last chance to qualify for the indoor track and field national championships. After a thorough warmup, Tess Rountree took some block starts to the first 2 hurdles and was ready to go. She was in the first heat amongst 5 other women competing in the pentathlon. She sprinted through all five hurdles cleanly and finished in a personal best, 9.64 to start the day with a lifetime best. She was already in third-place going out of the first event. Going into the high jump, she focused on a strong and powerful approach in her first five steps with a smooth, curved 'J' approach. She worked her way up the height skipping a few to reach her lifetime PR (1.63 meters) and moved to the next height of 1.66 meters. She cleared it on her second attempt! She attempted 1.69 meters, but was unable to clear it. After finishing the high jump, she was sitting second behind repeat national qualifier in the pentathlon (CNU's Enuma Ezenwa). In the shot put, Tess again proved she was not going to leave without putting forth her best effort with a season PR in the shot put, 11.18 meters. After three events, she was feeling strong and had to tackle the long jump. She was consistently jumping off the board, but only managed to squeeze out 4.49 meters by her third and final attempt.
